Analysis of plane stress and plane strain – Equations for the transformation of plane stress and plane strain, Mohr’s circle for plane stress and plane strain, principal stresses and principal strains, electrical resistance strain gauges;

Theories of elastic failure – Maximum principal strain theory, Total strain energy theory, Maximum shear stress theory (Tresca), Shear strain energy theory (von Mises), Maximum principal stress theory;

Analysis of columns – Euler’s theory of elastic buckling, plastic buckling;

Design of structural connections.

Solution of statically indeterminate problems

Thick walled cylinders and rotating discs;

Rectangular and circular  plates;

Contact stresses – the Hertz problem, spur and helical gears, bearings;
