Introduction

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Malta offers a number of taught modules, which together with modules administered by other engineering departments, contributes to the B.Eng.(Hons.) degree. The Bachelor of Engineering Honours course in Mechanical Engineering is developed to equip students with analytical and design skills which are applicable to jobs in virtually the whole range of mechanical engineering industries. It also provides students with the basic knowledge required for specialisation through further post graduate degrees in Engineering and Management.

Erasmus Student Exchange Program :

The department has an Erasmus student exchange program with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow UK and The University of Brno amongst others. The placings can start in September / October 2007 over the whole academic year (Semester 1 or Semester 2). Contact Erasmus / Socrates office for applications and more information.

Outgoing students module selection form
This form is to be filled in by all engineering students who have been offered an Erasmus placement in a European union university.

Events:

The 1st structural testing challenge

Faculty of Engineering exhibition 2007

Dr Mario Farrugia, lecturer within the department
has been selected as the recipient of the 2006 SAE
Myers Award for Outstanding Student Paper. He was selected for this award
in recognition of his SAE paper number 2006-01-1033, “Cycle-Averaged Heat
Flux Measurements in a Straight-Pipe Extension of the Exhaust Port of an
SI Engine.” The paper was written on research performed at Oakland
University, Rochester Michigan USA, as part of Dr Farrugia’s doctoral
studies.
This award is given annually for the best technical paper presented by a
student. Technical papers on any topic and from students worldwide,
presented from June 1, 2005 through May 31, 2006 were eligible for the
2006 award. More info on the Myers award:

FORMULA SAE
SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, and carries out research on vehicles and aircraft. It also organises student competitions to give engineering students the opportunity to apply and learn new skills, in various fields. One such competition is the Formula SAE compettition. Since 2006 Engineering students from the University of Malta have started working on a racing car suitable for entry in this competition. The students are guided by Dr Mario Farrugia who himself has gained experience through such previously organised Formula SAE competitions abroad.   For more information you may visit www.eng.um.edu.mt/mfsae and email mfsae@eng.um.edu.mt
