| Abstract:
Techniques for hiding information within a seemingly innocent
cover have fascinated mankind since antiquity. This flip side to
cryptography has always enjoyed a lesser interest than its well-known
counterpart. With the recent interest from the media conglomerates,
however, its study has been renewed with great vigor. Besides
watermarking of digital media, information hiding technology may be
used in applications both natural (such as for secret communication
within the military) and creative (like embedding patient records
within medical images to ensure their linkage). This presentation
introduces the art and science of information hiding within the modern
context of digital media, and deals with the technology behind it and
the applications it enables. The Speaker Graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta in 1997, Johann Briffa joined The University of Malta as a Research Engineer, working on wireless multimedia before taking up his academic post. He was awarded a master’s degree in 1999 for his research on interleavers for turbo codes. Johann then continued his studies at Oakland University in the United States, graduating in 2003 with a doctoral degree for his work on information hiding in images. Johann has a number of publications in international conferences and professional journals. He has lectured at Oakland University and has worked on projects for various companies, including Daimler-Chrysler. He is a member of IEEE and ACM. |
